Curfews continue

Monday morning the buses began coming by our apartment about 9am.  We didn't see any bus with more than 6 or 7 people riding on it.  We had to meet a realtor at the new apartment for our Senior Missionaries who are to arrive on Saturday so we drove to the office and then walked to the new apartment.  At our little fruit stand across the street from the office, there was a line about a half block long of people waiting to buy food.  The fruit stand was only letting in a couple of people at a time to shop. The farmacy also had a line around it as they only let in a few at a time.  Our Liders and the big Liders were both closed.
     76 gas stations have been destroyed over the weekend.  The stations near us have cars waiting to get gas in very long lines.  People are afraid of running out of gas.  The government says that there is plenty and not to worry.  We saw one station run out of gas and at another station the tanker was filling up the gas tanks.
     Thousands were in the streets on Monday all over Chile banging pans and honking horns but were peaceful.  8 subway stations and 16 buses have been burned.  152 traffic lights have been destroyed.     At least 90 flights have been canceled at the airport and 5,000 people slept in the airport Sunday night.  10,000 troops have been deployed and are trying to keep the protesters from vandalizing stores and violent actions.  11 have died and 1,500 detained and 200 injured.
     Our big mall is still closed.  We feel so sorry for the humble people who need the metro to get to and from their work and who don't get paid cause they can't get to work.  The buses stopped at about 5 this evening and the curfew is from 8pm tonight till 6am tomorrow.  The temple will be open tomorrow for the 11:30, 12:30 and 4:30 sessions.  We will drive down and serve on our morning shift.  Our missionaries are still on lockdown in their apartments.  Hopefully it will continue to be a quiet night with less violence.  We never expected something like this to happen in Chile.  This would not have surprised us in El Salvador.  We send our love.
