Sunday afternoon we were invited to Selva and Victor's home. We told her that we could come from 4-6 because we usually skype with some of our kids on Sunday evenings. She was devastated and had us come at 3:30. We were just thinking of leaving when Selva starts to fix supper for us and then Gloria arrived to visit. We didn't get home till 8:30! It is just hard to get away from these people. Selva, Victor, and their son Rudolf all attended church. We found out that Rudolf is also a baptized member? No one knew, not even his mother! We pray that with all three of them supporting each other, they will be able to learn and grow and remain active from now on.
Monday morning we had an office meeting with the President to discuss what needs to be done to prepare for our Mission Tour. Elder Juan Pablo Villar, a General Authority Seventy and member of our Area Presidency, and his wife are coming for our Zone Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday. We are in charge of the music and tables and chairs. We spent the rest of the day practicing with the choir in the Puente Alto Zone who will sing on Thursday and with Elder Angus who will play a violin solo on Wednesday. I will accompany Elder Angus and we need lots of practice. I am really rusty and never have been able to sight read well.
Got a call from two Elders. They lost their key somewhere between the workout room and their apartment. They decided to try and pick the lock and broke a paper clip off in the lock. They then found their key but it won't work cause of the paperclip - is that something they saw on MacGyver? Our key won't work either now so we told them to have their apartment guardhouse get a lock smith to get their door open and fix their lock and that they were responsible for the payment. What will these Elders think of next?
Tuesday the temple was overflowing! Oh how we love it when the people come and fill the temple. We had an amazing day and finished at 3 exhausted and hungry. But we headed right to the Nunoa Stake Center to practice again with Elder Angus. I have 4 key changes in this piece of music and one section is very minor. We got home, grabbed a bite to eat and headed to the Pocuro Ward Building to set up tables and chairs for Wednesday. We will have a sit down lunch and need tables and chairs for 96. The north half of the mission will come on Wednesday and the South half on Thursday. We got home at 8:30. It has been a very long day.
Thursday and our first Zone Conference. It was an amazing meeting. Elder Villar and his wife really taught us well. We all filed past them to begin our day to shake hands and he wanted to know where each was from. When we said Jerome, Idaho, Elder Villar said oh yes, it is just over the bridge from Twin Falls. We then learned that their daughter is engaged to Mike Lacano, son of Nichole and Isaac Lacano. They owned the "Tiger Stop" and served in the Spanish Branch when we were serving there.
Elder y Hermana Villar asked for a foto with us to send to their daughter. The church sure makes the world seem small at times.
Elder Angus and I did very well with our special number "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief"
One last practice this morning before the conference began. Thanks to a special blessing from Elder Thompson and prayers I was able to play a tough piece of music and accompany Elder Angus as he played his solo.
We had a nice lunch
We were both spiritually and physically fed today. What a blessing to be able to attend. And we get to go again tomorrow so I can lead the choir.
As we drive we see some pretty amazing things. These trees look like they have all been trimmed to make a canopy over the road. But in reality, the big trucks go through here and keep the branches cut off at this height.
As we drive around, I feel like there is not enough room on the road for all the lanes of traffic.
Elder Potter had the same feeling so he found out that in the States, each lane of traffic is between 11 and a half to 12 feet wide. He actually went out and measured this road. Each lane of traffic is only 9 and a half feet wide! When you have a bus in one lane and a truck in the other and you are in between them I get very nervous. We have actually bumped mirrors with other vehicles as we try to navigate these roads.
And then you have two lane roads where people park along one side and you have to weave in and out in order to get down the road.
All of these cars that you see in the fotos, except for the red one in the first foto are parked. Usually there are motorcycles and bicycles darting back and forth to add to the stress of navigating these streets. We will not miss driving in this city.
Our second Zone Conference on Thursday was great as well. We had angels singing with the choir. They did an amazing job.
This is the South half of the mission. We are in the back left hand side. We do love and admire these young missionaries and at the same time get very frustrated when they do things like trying to pick a lock!
We again had a great meal and were both spiritually and physically fed today.
We spent Friday on the road, trying to get a few service jobs completed. Elder Thompson was able to take care of 30 service calls this month. We still do not know of any Senior Couple coming to replace us so we are trying to get all of the pensiones painted and repaired before we go. We are getting photos of each and documenting as much as we can so that things won't be in the mess that we found them in when we came.
Because we found some cream of chicken soup at the store last week, we had funeral potatoes today! We haven't had them for 15 months. Boy was that a treat! We have spent our Saturday shopping for the coming week, cooking for the coming week, and relaxing this evening.
It has been a special week for us. We even received 2 Christmas cards and our package arrived from Ginger finally. So we enjoyed Christmas this week as well.
Well, enough for this week. We pray that you have had a wonderful week. You are always in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you for your prayers in our behalf. We know that we are being watched over by angels. We send our love. Till next week, Chao
