Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Joshua 1:9

Leaves are turning and fall is definately here

October began with the final session of General Conference on Sunday the 1st.  We look forward to this weekend for 6 months.  And then it is here and gone so fast that we start looking forward to the next conference.  It is wonderful to sit and be taught by our General Authorities.  I think that Elder Holland's talk is my favorite, as usual.  He counseled that we are not perfect now.  Don't judge yourself so harshly.  Just keep trying and moving forward.  His message was so full of hope and love.
We were supposed to go camping one last time this year with Kim and George on the 5th, 6th, and 7th but Lon got the call that he had to start driving in the beets again on the 6th.  So we spent the 5th with Kim and George sight-seeing here in Southern Idaho.  We were going to go camping at Thompson Flats so we drove there to see the area.  We had never been there before.
It is located south of Albion, just past the Pomerell Ski area.
As you can see, it would have been a bit chilly to camp this weekend as this area got it's first snow for the year this week.
It is a very nice campground though.  We understand that it is always busy so you have to reserve a camp space weeks ahead.  Maybe we won't camp here after all.  Too many people!
We drove to Lake Cleaveland
Orr's car parked at Lake Cleaveland.  It was a bit slippery climbing back out.
It was quite a contrast from the snowy foothills to the valley below.  Wish the foto would show it better.  The harvest is in full gear below and the patch work quilt of the fields was beautiful.
Pomerelle Ski Resort.  It only took me 65 years to get here.
The phone booth even has a phone in it.  Don't see too many of these around anymore.

We drove back down the mountain and headed for the City of Rocks National Reserve. We drove through the towns of  Declo, Albion, Elba and Almo.  We stopped in Almo to visit the Visitor's Center and learn more about the City of Rocks and the history of the area.
Covered wagon on display, without the cover.  Lon
This is Castle Rock State Park which we didn't have time to drive through
Lon and I have never been here before, George says that he and Kim have but Kim doesn't remember it at all.  The rock formations were breathtaking.

Rock climbers were everywhere.  You can see a man right on top of the rock and when we zoomed it

There is another man just below him still climbing up.

Rock climbing, biking and hiking are definitely the favorite sports here
See the man on the top of the rock formation?
I got a better shot of him as we went around the bend in the road.
We watched this young man trying to scale the cliffs, but he seemed to be frozen in place with all of the family below watching and encouraging him to move.
We found out that the California Wagon Train Trail went right through the City of Rocks and later it was the Boise-Kelton Stage Route and the Salt Lake City Alternate Trail.  This section of land has some great stories to share if it could just talk!
We drove through Oakley, saw the Oakley Dam and ended up in Burley for lunch at Pizza Hut.
We got home about 6:30, just in time for George and Kim to get to the Jerome Football game to watch their grandson, Cody, play.  We watched it on Facebook.  What a fun day.  We saw lots of new areas that were just beautiful and so close to home.  There are a few more places here in Southern Idaho that we have not seen so we are planning on visiting them next summer with George and Kim.  So sad that we have waited more than 65 years to explore our own back yard.
Friday afternoon, Ysidro Gonzales came to our door and insisted that we show up at his house at 5:30 for supper.  We had forgotten that it was his birthday that day.  We had a nice evening with most of our friends from the Spanish Branch.
Lon started hauling beets again so he put in 10 - 12 hour days for the rest of the month.  The weather was great and there were no major breakdowns so they were able to finish the beets on the 25th.
On the 13th, Jake and Jackie and family and Lindsey and her family (Debbie and Doug's children) came to visit with Grandma Reid.  I went out and spent the afternoon visiting.

Saturday was Eisley's first basketball game.
We were shocked that Eisley was not the tallest one on the court.  She even slopped in a basket.  It was pretty rough as it was their first game.
I worked on the last levi quilt all month while Lon was working all day.  I had to put the quilt on in the front room so it was hard to get around but finally done and don't plan on doing any more.
Biggest quilt I have done.  This is a king size bed.
We went to dinner at El Sombrero with the beet crew on the 26th.  I didn't feel good all night and was sick the rest of the weekend.  I couldn't find a sub for primary so I slept through Sacrament then went to Primary and Choir and came home to bed again.
Monday morning we headed to Boise to tour the new Meridian Temple.  It is huge!
We had an appointment with Scottie to get Lon's tooth fixed and met up with Craig and Robbie for lunch.  We got home just in time to get to Twin to attend the band concert.
Annabell Kronstein (Anne) played the clarinet in the Wind Ensemble and Chandler played the Alto Sax in the Concert Band.  We are going to enjoy high school band concerts this year.
Halloween was very uneventful.  We served at the temple and came home and only had 2 families come to Trick or Treat.
Another month has come and gone.  The weather is starting to change and we can see that winter is just around the corner.  Lon has everything winterized and we are ready physically.  It is the mental dread of the cold weather that is hard.  But we do enjoy the 4 seasons so we will face winter with courage!  (looking forward with hope to spring).
